Why Write a Story About 9/11?

I’ve pondered this question many times. Like millions of Americans, I watched in horror as terrorists attacked the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and crashed a plane in a field in Pennsylvania; nearly 3,000 people died. The shock, confusion, fear, sadness, and anger were overwhelming, and I felt a deep sense of vulnerability that many can relate to.

I realized that New Yorkers and others close to the epicenter experienced the events differently from the rest of us, who were watching from afar. I wanted to write a story that felt real—one that truly allowed readers to experience what the characters went through. Sharing these stories can inspire understanding and empathy, helping us all grasp the lasting impact of trauma.

I began writing Emily’s story 3½ years ago. As the 25th anniversary of the attacks approaches, there’s a generation that has no memory of that day or its aftermath. Emily's story is for them and for anyone who has faced trauma and survived. It’s also about the healing power of love.
